The official West Virginia state flag features a white field bordered in blue, with the state's coat of arms at the center. The coat of arms includes a farmer and a miner flanking a large stone inscribed with the state's admission date, June 20, 1863. Also present are crossed rifles and a liberty cap, symbolizing the state's motto, "Montani Semper Liberi" (Mountaineers are always free). A large red ribbon above the coat of arms displays "STATE OF WEST VIRGINIA".
